LES ARC FILM FESTIVAL what makes it stand out - By Renate Dujakovic
Turning the Les Arcs Ski Resort into a film festival venue is truly extraordinary, overcoming unique challenges to transform a winter sports hub into a cinematic destination. Adapting the resort’s infrastructure to accommodate screenings and stages for a diverse crowd is no small feat. Moreover, balancing the crisp, snowy mountain backdrop with a cinematic atmosphere requires careful planning to ensure the setting enhances the experience. This blend of natural beauty and creative adaptation makes Les Arcs Film Festival a one-of-a-kind event.

While many festivals focus on flashy premieres and mainstream hits, Les Arcs Film Festival stands apart by celebrating films that are authentic, meaningful, and true to their craft. The festival’s Hauteur program, which showcases daring new talent, is a perfect example of this commitment. Emerging filmmakers compete for the prestigious Prix Coup de Cœur, offering fresh, bold perspectives that challenge conventional storytelling. Films like Windless and September and July are prime examples of this dedication, presenting unique narratives that push boundaries and highlight the festival’s focus on artistic integrity over commercial success.
Guillaume Calop had the bold idea to create a film festival in his hometown, despite not knowing what the outcome would be. Undeterred by uncertainty, he forged ahead with his vision, and his determination paid off when he secured crucial support—250 apartments offered free of charge. This generous gesture helped lay the foundation for the festival’s success, allowing it to accommodate filmmakers and attendees in a way that would have been impossible otherwise. Thanks to this pivotal support, Calop was able to turn his dream of blending cinema with the stunning backdrop of his hometown into a reality.
Mister Calop and his whole team truly welcomed us with their open and inclusive approach as young journalists of the MIOB network which has been a refreshing contrast to the often hierarchical and exclusive nature of the film industry. They’ve fostered a space where creativity and collaboration thrive—rather than one reserved for a select few.
The festival isn’t just about the films; it’s about immersing yourself in a unique atmosphere where cinema and the breathtaking Alps come together. The stunning mountain backdrop enhances the experience, offering attendees a chance to enjoy world-class cinema while surrounded by natural beauty. This integration of nature with storytelling creates a one-of-a-kind environment that elevates both the films and the overall festival experience.
While many urban festivals can feel fast-paced and chaotic, Les Arcs embraces the peaceful, contemplative nature of the mountains. Even the shuttle schedule, which isn’t exactly designed for quick transfers between destinations, adds to the charm of the experience. It encourages you to slow down and truly appreciate the stunning surroundings, making every journey part of the adventure rather than just a means to an end.
Though I’ve only been here for a couple of days (it feels like just yesterday), I’ve already been fully immersed in the unique festival experience. While I haven’t had the chance to watch as many films as I’d like, I’ve been navigating the mountain with new excitement—whether it’s mastering the ski tram or timing shuttle buses with Olympic precision! Who else gets to choose between skiing, missing a part of the movie to catch another movie or waiting an hour for the next shuttle because you liked the movie so much?
Those special experiences are the only that can happen here due to the soulfulness that the festival has. I leave feeling recharged and ready to tackle new projects with fresh enthusiasm.
As the festival wraps up, I can’t help but already dream of returning next year—perhaps with a little more time for films and a little less shuttle-bus timing anxiety!
So, Guillaume Calop, if you’re listening, consider this glowing review as my official RSVP for next year.
